Z-Start
Introduction
Z-Start is a utility program designed to give you total control over the programs in Your StartUp program folder.
If you have more than one or two programs in Your StartUp folder, you may have wished for a way to have
the programs start in a fixed sequence or to have one program wait for another for finish. Windows does not
have any built-in mechanism to accomplish this. It starts everything it finds, in alphabetical order, and that's
it.
While you can work around some of these limitations by renaming your programs shortcuts or using DOS style
batch files, this is usually cumbersome and not very flexible. Z-Start is a 32-bit Windows application that
offers many possibilities to define just what your computer does when You start it up.
When you install Z-Start, it will install a shortcut to itself in the StartUp folder. Then it will move all
existing shortcuts to its own directory and incorporate them in its own launch list. You can then edit and change
this list or create completely new ones.
Some of the options that Z-Start offers are:
- Specific startup order.
You can define exactly which programs are launched in which order.
- Waits for task completetion before continuing.
Every program in Your launch list can be set to wait
for the preceeding one to finish execution and terminate. This is great if you have to run, for example, a program that
updates data to which the next program must have access or one program must initialize a piece of hardware before the
next program can use that hardware.
- Waits for fixed amount of time before continuing.
Likewise, you can set any program in Your launch list to wait
a specified number of seconds after the preceeding one has been launched. The applications for this feature are similar
to the aforementioned, but suitable for cases where the first program has to run but will not terminate.
A different reason to use this feature is the situation that two or more large programs have to load. If they all load simultaneously, they can actually take more time than if they load one at a time. In this case, just measure the time that a program needs to load completely and set this as the delay period before the next program is launched.
- Launches programs only on certain days of the week.
This feature is perfect for programs that need run on startup, but only on certain weekdays.
- Launches programs only once per day, regardless of how often the system is (re)started.
You will often have programs that need to run exactly once and must not run again before the next day. Using this feature, your program will be launched in morning but not again if your have to restart your system at any time during the day.
- Provides multiple Launch configurations, selectable with one keystroke.
You may have different requirement each time you start your system. With Z-Start, you can define up to 26 different launch lists and have any one of them excuted when your system starts. One of these lists will be a default list that executes if a specified amount time passes without user entry.
