Z-Desk FAQ
Q: Why does the SYST display show a Pentium II processor when I really have a Pentium III.
A: This is a problem with Windows' hardware recognition. All versions up to and including Windows 98 detected Intel Pentium III processors as Pentium II's; Windows 98 Second Edition is the first version to correctly recognize and display Intel Pentium III processors.
Q: The SYST display shows wrong sizes for my hard disks and/or network drives.
A: This mistake has been corrected in the latest version of Z-Desk. If your version of Z-Desk is earlier than 2.02.0075, please download the newest version from this website.
If you want to check which version of Z-Desk is currently installed on your system, click on an empty part of any of Z-Desk's displays and press Ctrl-R to bring up the registration dialog. The program version is displayed in the top part of the window. If your version is lower than 2.02.0075, we recommend to download the new version.
Q: With so many functions, will Z-Desk mess up my system if I'm not careful ?
A: No. Z-Desk does indeed dig very deep into your registry and directory structure, but it does not change anything - it only retrieves all information that is necessary to fulfil its function. Only its own options are written to the registry.
Q: When I try to install Z-Desk, I get error messages about missing or wrong DLL's.
A: This is usually a version conflict with msvbvm50.dll. Z-Desk needs the Service Pack 2 version of this file (version 5.00.4319) or later. You can download a zipped archive from this website. First make sure to delete all occurences of msvbvm50.dll on your system except the one in \windows\system; even if you have the correct version there, an outdated version anywhere else on your system may spell trouble.
Now try to run Setup again. If you still have problems, download the correct version from the Download page on this website. Unzip the file into the \windows\system directory and run Setup again.
Since Z-Desk only needs this one additional file, you should be okay now.
Q: Why are the letters so small on some of my displays ?
A: This can be a problem with Version 1, where Z-Desk scaled the display font to accomodate the longest name on any given display screen. With very long names, the font may become too small to read. This is one point that has been taken care of as of version 2. If you are a registered user, download the new version from this site - your registration will be valid for this version as well.
Q: As a registered user of Version 1 or 2, do I have to register again ?
A: No. Your old user ID and password will be recognized and accepted by version 3 as well.
Q: Will Z-Desk work with my version of Windows 9x/ME ?
A: Yes. Even Z-Desk 1.0 has been tested under various versions of Windows 98 before it was released and Z-Desk 3 was thoroughly tested under the retail version of Windows 98, 98SE and ME.
Q: Can I use Z-Desk under Windows NT / 2000 / XP ?
A: No. Although Z-Desk, as a real 32-bit-application, can be installed and launched under NT 4.0 and later, the two operating systems have a completely different internal structure. You will be able to launch Z-Desk under NT but will probably experience problems with many functions. We have done no testing under NT and do advise you not to use Z-Desk under NT.
